Privacy Policy

Effective date: March 30, 2026

The short version: Thread has no backend, no servers, and no accounts. Your API keys and conversation data never leave your browser except to call the AI APIs you configure using your own keys. We collect nothing. We store nothing on our end. There is no "our end."

What Thread is

Thread is a Chrome browser extension that monitors your Claude and ChatGPT sessions, captures rolling checkpoints, and generates a session handoff document when you choose to transition to a new session. It is a local tool that runs entirely within your browser.

Data we collect

We collect no personal data. Specifically:

No names, email addresses, or identifiers
No location data
No browsing history
No usage analytics or telemetry from the extension itself
No payment or financial information (purchases are handled entirely by the Chrome Web Store)

What Thread stores locally

Thread stores the following data on your device only, using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage API:

Your API keys — Anthropic and OpenAI API keys you enter in Thread's settings. Stored locally, never transmitted to Thread or any third party.
Session checkpoints — Snapshots of your conversation state captured during a session. Stored locally and cleared automatically after a successful session transition.
Your preferences — Settings like your transition threshold and monitoring toggle. Stored locally.

None of this data is transmitted to Thread, to us, or to any server we operate. There is no Thread server.

How conversation text is used

When Thread captures a checkpoint or generates a session handoff, it reads text from your active Claude or ChatGPT tab and sends it directly to the AI API you have configured — either Anthropic's API (api.anthropic.com) or OpenAI's API (api.openai.com) — using your own API key. This API call goes directly from your browser to the AI provider. Thread does not intercept, log, or retain this data.

Your use of Anthropic's and OpenAI's APIs is governed by their respective privacy policies and terms of service.

Clipboard

After generating a session handoff document, Thread writes it to your clipboard so you can paste it into a new session. This is a one-time write operation. Thread does not read your clipboard contents.

Permissions

Thread requests the following Chrome permissions and uses them as follows:

activeTab / tabs — To detect when you are on Claude or ChatGPT, and to navigate to a new session after a transition.
scripting — To inject the session monitoring script into Claude and ChatGPT pages.
storage — To save your API keys and preferences locally on your device.
clipboardWrite — To copy your session handoff document to your clipboard.
Host permissions (claude.ai, chatgpt.com, api.anthropic.com, api.openai.com) — To monitor sessions on Claude and ChatGPT, and to make direct API calls using your own keys.

Third parties

Thread does not sell, share, or transfer any user data to third parties. The only outbound network requests Thread makes are to api.anthropic.com and api.openai.com, using API keys you provide, to perform the core function of the extension.

Children

Thread is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any information from children.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the effective date above. Since Thread collects no data, changes to this policy are unlikely to affect your privacy in any meaningful way.
